General
The crew consisted of Tapani Numminen, Markku Lauren and myself. Our plan was to get the four species we'd missed on our previous trip and still needed for our lists and then to see some migration. We drove a total of 2631 km in seven days and used about $20/person a day for all our needs, incl. petrol, food and hotel. We had altogether 191 species. The air-ticket cost 995 FIM ($235). The car prices had gone up, we paid 2.100.000 TL ($450) for one week.
Hotels cost 50.000-119.000 TL for three with 90.000 being common. Current exchange rate was 1000 TL = 0.90 FIM = 0.21 USD. Traffic was erratic as usual, we saw three crashes on the first day.
On our previous trip we found out that very few Turks speak anything but Turkish, this time there were even fewer.
Some comments on the sites
For full information on the sites (as well as general info), see our June 1990 or any other Turkey report.
Göksu delta
The ground was much drier than in June, so it was easy to drive around and we visited places where we hadn't been before.
Birecik
In the morning we visited the 'normal' sites. During the hottest period of the day we drove around, both east and west of the town, but didn't discover anything of great value.
Belen
We didn't have much information about good raptorwatching points, so decided to find our own. The best time for Lesser Spotted Eagles is about the third week of September so we were a little early. Others, like Steppe and Spotted Eagles, turn up even later.
In the morning we had problems with the fog, this may probably affect the migration, both numbers and routes. On clear days part of the raptors may fly across the mountains further north, thus missing Belen. So days with low clouds (but no fog) are probably the best.
As we 'missed' the start of the migration on all three days, we didn't find out when it starts, according to '*' it is rather late. There seems to be at least three different routes in the Belen region, possibly others more to the west. There are several possible watching points, none of which is clearly 'the best'. The best choice probably depends on the weather and personal intrests.
We know of the following (from west to east, north to south):
• The Güzelayla Road
There seemed to be rather a good view to the east from at least to points along this route, one was just below the village of Müftüler, the other just below the village of Güselayla. As we visited these sites in the evening we didn't find out whether they were on the route.
• Sarimazi village (hotel Seyran)
It should be possible to watch the migration from the roof. The birds are a bit far away though.
• Belen village
There's a road up to the west of the village, drive about 500 m, stop at the cemetary. This site is not so high, but numbers are pretty good.
• Radar Station road
This road (paved) starts towards the north from the bus station at the village south of Belen. 1.5 km up there is a good watching site, unfortunately there is a risk of getting arrested even though there are no prohibiting signs. We didn't go there. Watching can also be done from this village, but the traffic is rather disturbing.
• The Pass
Just above the highest point of the pass (740m) there are three possible watching points. Take a track which starts just south of the highest point and goes north uphill. The two lower sites are both quarries and visited by trucks. The highest has a very good view all around, but you may miss birds flying very low above the road. You are also in view of the radar station. The birds pass this point rather nicely, but most will either be against the sun, or above you, thus making identification and searching rather difficult.
• West of the Pass
Just north of the highest point of the pass there is a paved road to the south. This goes through a village (where the road becomes a track) and continues west. We found three possible watching points. Number 1 is pretty good, but on the left there is a mountain which may hide part of the birds. Especially Lesser Spotted Eagles seemed to like to take the western route. The view towards the north and east is very good, but there is no view towards the south.
Site 2 may be the best. It is rather high up (maybe 1000 m?) with views towards the north - southeast. Thus most birds seen will be easy to identify since the sun is in ones back. Part of the birds fly low down in the valley and may be difficult to spot, but most of them start to soar just south of the site. Some birds will come pretty close. Birds passing over the mainroad and the mountains to the north of this seemed mostly to be close enough for identification. This site is 8.9 km from the main road (along the track, estimated about 3-4 km as the crow flies).
Site 3 was good when the fog was thick in the valley. The view is good towards the north, restricted towards the south, good enough towards the west, but somewhat restricted towards the east. The mountain between site 2 and 3 is too high to see over. But some birds follow the peak of this mountain. The valley along which most birds fly is going north-south and the birds are therefore easy to view. Many come straight over, unfortunately mostly not low enough. It takes about 20 minutes to drive the track up to this site from the main road (12.5 km).
Site 4 which we did not reach, is a high plateau west of the main road in the middle of the valley. It may be good for photography. We did not find the track which leads to it, though. There were several other unexplored tracks, there may still be better viewpoints to find in this region.
• The petrol station
About a km south of the pass there is a petrol station, try this for watching migrators crossing the mountains too soon.
Eregli, Akgöl
The lake was very dry indeed. We first thought that there was no water at all, but then we discovered a small area of water 12 km west of Bögecik. We had good views from a cliff by the road, but the birds were rather far away. We did not visit sites 1 and 2, but site 1 could be good for Greater Sandplover even in autumn even if it looks dry.
Karapinar
There is a crater on the south side of the road, *. There is a lake on the bottom of this crater where we had some birds. A site to visit if you have a few extra hours when you drive by.
18 km N Akseki
Good for Woodpeckers (White-backed and Middle-spotted), Red-breasted Nuthatch, Woodlark, *. Very easy site to visit.
Itinerary
Friday - Saturday, 13-14th September
835.3 km, Antalya - Gaziantep
We flew to Antalya where we arrived 22.30. We picked up our luggage, changed some money and rented a car from Europcar. It was a Sahin (local Fiat 131). When the car deal had been completed it was already 23.30. We had our first bird, a Little Owl, at the airport, sitting on a pylon.
We drove all night along the coast road (390 km) to Tasucu. When dawn came at 6.15 we still had not reached the town, but stopped a few times to bird. At 7.35 we reached the Göksu delta where we birded until 14.00. The big lake was difficult to see, although we managed a Purple Gallinule and a Dalmatian Pelican (lifer). Also some Night Herons, White Pelicans, Squacco Herons, Purple Herons, Ruddy Shelducks, a Marbled Teal, Black and White-winged Terns and Penduline Tits. The best view was from the southern side of the lake. Then we checked another smaller lake where we had some Flamingos. Driving back north we flushed a male Black Francolin and three Stone-Curlews.
We checked the north side, but it was pretty dry. Found a Little Bittern in the little 'marsh'. Had a meal at a local restaurant (about 10.000 TL/person) ($2). I found that Turkish food served at small local restaurants was pretty good, but that served at larger, more touristy places was less good.
Driving east we stopped and had a look at the old ruin at Toprakkale which was built in the 14th? century. Very good view from ruin which lies up on a hill overlooking the plain. It is supposed to be good on spring migration, which I can well believe.
We continued to Gaziantep where we stayed at the hotel Mercram. The car was locked into a car park and I was a bit worried that we wouldn't get it out in time the next morning. It was a little difficult to explain that we wanted the car at 5 am, since nobody spoke a word in anything but Turkish.
We had dinner at a pretty expensive looking restaurant, but the food turned out to be a little on the spicy side.
Sunday, 15th September
116.5 km, Birecik
When I got to the car-park the gate was locked and no-one was in sight. Just as I had feared. However, luckily the guard was sleeping in a small room in the park, I just had to wake him up. Which I managed to do after shouting and hitting the gate for about 5 minutes. When I asked him why he had not opened up, he showed me that he did not have a watch!
Drove to Birecik which we reached at 6.15. We walked down the big canyon and almost immediately an Eagle Owl flew straight over us. We tried to find some See-see Partridges, but no luck. Had two Menetries' Warblers and lots of Black-eared Wheatears. We returned to the shore (of Euphrat) in time to see the Black-bellied and Pin-tailed Sandgrouse fly over (7.45-8.30).
Next we checked the 'green canyon' for songbirds. Had several Menetries' Warblers, a Golden Oriole and a female Dead Sea Sparrow.
It was already getting hot (10.30), so we went for a beer in the Owl Park. No Striated Scops around though. Checked the river from the shadow of a tree and then went for a drive, first on the west side of the river. Had three Blue-cheeked Bee-eaters on the powerlines north-west of the colony. We managed to reach the river further up, by driving along some bad tracks, but had nothing much for it. Temperature was now about 36 C, but the slight breeze was still cooling, not like it hade been in June 1990, when the furnace hot wind just made it worse. I guess it must have been nearer 45 C then. Drove around behind the town on the east side, but found nothing. Drove back through the town and were quite relieved when we discovered streets which were just broad enough to let us through. I don't know what would have happened if the car had been 20 cm broader, since we were going steeply down-hill and there was hardly any room to turn.
Went for a beer to the motel (just west of the bridge, north of the road) where we booked rooms for the night and took a shower. By then it was 5pm and again cool enough to bird on foot. Went back to the big canyon and managed to see three See-sees (lifer), which flew up at the bottom of the canyon, when we were walking on top. Two Desert Larks were drinking from the pool. We got back to the car just in time before it got dark.
We returned to the Owl Park and ordered a meal and wrote down our observations while waiting for the Striated Scops to appear. Which it did, just after 8pm. Had nice views as it sat in the trees.
Monday, 16th September
367.1 km, Birecik - Belen
We got up early and were at Isikli at dawn. Had five Great Rock Nuthatch, Sombre Tit, two Rock Thrush, four Bimaculated Larks and on the other side of the village a Syrian Woodpecker. Left at 9 am.
We stopped en route to photograph the scenery and found a Rock Nuthatch. When we left Markku had forgotten his camera on the front of the car and after a while it fell off. I saw it fly past the window and ran after it and managed to catch it just before a bus would have run it over. It was a little damaged though, but may be usable. Drove south towards Belen Pass (near the Syrian border).
We reached the pass at midday and Tapani soon spotted some raptors flying high up. Spent some time in trying to find a good watching spot. (We wanted to avoid the road up to the radar station as a Finnish crew was arrested there last year.) In the end we settled for a good spot at a quarry. The only problem was that most birds flew against the sun. Had time to see two Griffon Vultures, 210 White Pelicans, 15 Black Storks, 9 White Storks, 2 Short-toed Eagles, some Aquila Eagles and a flock of 1000 Levant Sparrowhawks before some thick fog came in from the coast and it got rather quiet.
We drove to Iskenderun and checked the harbour which was rather empty. Drove a nice road up to Guzelayla (12 km) and down to Sarimazi, the village next to Belen, (8 km). The scenery was beautiful and there were two or three spots which might be good for raptor watching.
We still wanted to find more watching points so we went up another track which started just at the highest point of the pass (740 m). Managed to find one spot which looked pretty good and decided to return there in the morning. Checked in at the Sayran in Sarimazi and had dinner.
Tuesday, 17th September
44.1 km, Belen
Early in the morning I discovered I'd contracted a stomach desease so I wasn't too unhappy when I noticed it was quite foggy outside. At 7 I woke up the boys and we went out to look for songbirds in the valley. Not many about though. The boys ate breakfast while we watched towards the north, but no raptors came into view. Except a Levant Sparrowhawk which probably wasn't migrating at the moment.
We went up to the spot we'd found the previous day anyway. Raptor watching from 10.25-14.20. The most common raptor seemed to be Marsh Harrier. Also had a few eagles, Levant Sparrowhawks, Honey Buzzards, etc, but not enough. A local invited us to tea, but we pretended not to understand, since there was no way we could explain that we just didn't have the time. We decided that the hill on our left was probably hiding a lot of raptors, so we left and drove west. As the road went up another hill, we spotted five Lesser Spotted Eagles plus an assortment of other eagles and decided to stay there. It was pretty late though, so we didn't have time to see much. The sums for the day were 44 White Pelicans, 66 Marsh Harrier, 7 Short-toed Eagles, 425 Levant Sparrowhawks, 16 Aquilas, 9 Booted Eagles and an Alpine Swift.
We got back to the hotel at 18.45 and had dinner. I ate a few tomatoes.
Wednesday, 18th September
386.0 km, Belen - Demirkazik
We slept pretty late as the weather was again bad, with fog. Started at 7 am, did some shopping and went up to the site we'd found the previous afternoon. Migration was very slow in starting, but then suddenly, at just after 11 am, there was a crowd of Lesser Spotted Eagles, Booted Eagles and Levant Sparrowhawks. 30 minutes later the migration stopped and we realized that once again we were standing in the wrong place.
Drove down and stopped rather near site I (where we had started the previous day). We found that from this spot we had a very good view of the whole valley from high up and there were birds everywhere. Part of them were pretty far away, but since we had the sun in our back we could identify them anyway. Except we didn't have time to identify them all, there were too many. It was also a little difficult to find some of them as they were flying against the ground, not the sky.
We stayed for three hours and saw quite enough (in the sense that it would not have been possible to study properly a larger number of birds). Part of the birds came pretty close, unfortunately only few close enough for photography. We saw one middle-phase Booted Eagle which even came close enough to shoot. Unfortunately against the sun.
We drove north and took the route via Sarimazi to Ceyhan. The road was quite good, but we did not see many birds.
We stopped for a beer in Tarsus. A small part of the new motorway had been completed and we tried it, only to find that there was a speed-limit of 40 kmp and at the end we had to pay toll! We had supper at a local restaurant in Potanzi, the meal was quite good.
When we arrived at the lodge at Demirkazik the doors were closed and it seemed very dark, but after we'd been making some noice the doors were opened.
Thursday, 19th September
239.6 km, Demirkazik - Eregli
At dawn we drove up part of the track up the mountain. Halfway up the engine died due to the steep angle of the track and lack of oxygen. So we walked up the rest which took one and a half hours. We spent the next seven hours on the plataeu. At first we walked around the spring, which produced flocks of Snowfinches, Crimson-winged Finches, Red-fronted Serins and Shore Larks. The Snowfinch flock, which we estimated at 300, was very impressive. I was beginning to get depressed we continued towards the upper end of the canyon. And there, at last, we found two Radde's Accentors (lifer). They gave good views too. We went down the canyon about 50 meters and stayed there for about half an hour, but no sign of the Wallcreepers nor any Alpine Accentors.
We were running out of time, so we climbed back up on the plateau and left. Just before we reached the car a Golden Eagle, a Booted Eagle and two Griffon Vultures passed us. Checked out of the hotel and drove towards Eregli. Our plan wasto do most of the lake this day, but we were too late. When we reached Akgöl there was only about an hour of daylight left and the lake looked very dry indeed. We took the Bögecik road and finally, after 12 km, we found the birds, swimming in what was left of the huge lake. The 'pool' was maybe a few hundred meters long. We only had time to see that there were lots of pelicans, egrets, herons, shorebirds and Marsh Harriers. A flock of Swallows and Sand Martins rose towards the sky, we estimated it at 20.000.
As it got dark a thunderstorm was nearing, and we got to see the most spectacular lightnings I ever saw! We wanted to photograph, but then the rain came, before it was dark enough. The flashes surrounded us on all sides, but I think the car wasn't hit. We hoped that this would ensure some more water for the birds and the fish. There was also a hailstorm with hails so large we were afraid the car might be damaged.
We had dinner at a local restaurant in Eregli, just by the hotel. It was still raining hard.
Friday, 20th September
642.7 km, Eregli - Antalya
We left the hotel at 5.40, while it was still dark. When dawn came we saw that it was still cloudy. When we reached the 'pool' of the previous evening we also found out that it was cold! We had to put on all the clothes we had. It felt a lot colder than the 13C the meter showed. For the next three hours we kept watching the pool, but it was difficult to identify the smaller birds, it was too dark. Then the sun came through for a few minutes and we got some shorebirds and ducks. Goodies included about five Dalmatian Pelicans (at least one juvenile), pair of Ferrugineous Duck, Hen Harrier, 200 Pygmy Cormorants and 900 White Pelicans.
As we were leaving a German-speaking crew arrived, but they were just beginning their trip so they did not have much to tell us. They had visited a crater site near Karapinar though, which was on our route.
Before leaving the area we checked the villages of Adabaq and Tatlikuyu where we had about 20 Lesser Kestrels and four Red-footed Falcons.
Stopped in Eregli to make a phonecall to confirm the flight home. It cost 7.000 TL ($ 1.5). There was just a crowd in front of the phone counter in the post office and two phones, so one had to make the call with everyone hanging over ones shoulder.
We wanted to visit another site on the north side of Akgöl, but the rain of the previous evening had made the track slippery, so we turned around after having seen some Short-toed and Lesser Short-toed Larks.
10 km short of Karapinar we quickly checked the crater and had three new species for the trip, Black-necked Grebe, Shelduck and Kentish Plover.
It was a long drive to Akseki, 350 km. The mountain road between Beysehir and Akseki was slow but beautiful. Unfortunately I'm afraid it will not stay that way since I presume that the new road they are building to Akseki will continue north all the way to Beysehir. It would be understandable as it probably is an imortant route, but it will be a terrible loss to nature. The road south of Akseki certainly is a good road, but one sees almost nothing, it is so wide and when one does it almost makes one cry, the landscape looks so broken. It is the worst job I've ever seen a road do to a beautiful mountain landscape. They've just gone through ripping and tearing and depositing huge hillsides of gravel. At one point they seemed to be diverting a stream from a beautiful canyon, it looked as if the road will be going right along the bottom, with the stream under it, concealed under cement.
18 km north of Akseki we checked a 'new' site (found in Doug Page's report). As soon as we stepped out of the car a woodpecker was seen, unfortunately it flew off and we lost it. But soon after another was heard calling, a call that sounded strange to us. So we followed and about half an hour later the bird finally came into view, a beautiful Middle-spotted Woodpecker (lifer). There were also lots of other birds about, Wooodlarks, Krupers Nuthatches, Redstarts, Mistle Thrushes, Sombre Tits and a Wood Warbler.
We still had some daylight left on the drive down to the coast road. Markku did some shopping, then we drove to the airport where we had some trouble in getting the two-hour delay confirmed. We packed our stuff on the pavement and returned the car. Afterwards we had ample time, for once, to write some postcards.
The flight left at 2 am and we landed at 6 am. While we waited for the luggage Tapani phoned a friend who was en route to the airport as he was to leave for Mallorca at 8 am. We were a bit surprised to hear that a Sabine's Gull had been present for several days, just 60 km off. But we'd taken our own car along, just in case, so as soon as the boys had fetched the car we drove north. Boy, was I relieved when we reached the site and the bird was still present. We spent some time there and got excellent views, it was very tame.
While we were photographing, my pager went off: Flamingo, almost on our route home. So we went there and saw it and then we drove home.
